How to use Google Search Console to increase your website visitors

Wouldn’t it be handy if there was a free tool that could help you read customers’ minds? Good news! When it comes to what they are searching for on the internet Google Search Console can do just this. And if used correctly its insights can help you win more website visitors and leads.

Using Google tools to monitor marketing success

You may have heard of Google Analytics. It monitors and reports on the number of visits you’ve had to your website. It’s a free tool that we love and find really useful for demonstrating marketing campaign success to our clients.

However, Google Search Console (previously known as Webmaster Tools) takes things a step further by interrogating the data. It knows how many internet users have seen your website in their search results and how many of those people have acted on what they saw by visiting your content.

So, how does Google Search Console work?

It gathers data about how your website content is performing in Google’s search results. It tells you:

  • Where your pages are ranking on Google over a period of time
  • How many people saw your website in Google searches
  • and, importantly, whether they went on to visit your website.

This is useful because if your website content is appearing in search results but is not getting clicked you know you need to improve it.

You can look at how individual pages are ranking and what keywords or ‘queries’ people are typing into Google to find your website.

Regularly checking the data collected by Google Search Console can help you improve the SEO or Search Engine Optimisation of your website in a healthy way. 

If your pages aren’t currently appearing in search results it gives you hints about why this might be. Your potential customers may search for services like yours using word combinations that aren’t on your website.

Likewise, Search Console can tell you if your website is ranking for irrelevant keywords.

When you are armed with these insights you can hone your existing website. Do this by creating new pages and writing fresh blog posts to build on popular topics.

Simple changes such as adjusting page titles, making page descriptions more compelling and adding more keyword combinations to your pages could make all the difference.

But where should you start? Look at the pages and posts on your website that appear on page 2 of Google’s search results. These have the potential for quick improvements that could move them onto page 1. This will make your website immediately more visible.
